Between Neighborhoods

Have you seen the Unisphere? What do you see? Between Neighborhoods sees the interborough and international histories of imperialism and immigration that orbit the world, in Queens, across the last fifty years. The spit-screen artdoc travels transhistorically –– between present and past at once –– to contemplate the mammoth monument to Washington’s Cold War global empire that Robert Moses constructed at the center of his metropolitan empire, for the last New York World’s Fair. Working between original and archival footage, the documentary diptych shows how the midcentury legacy of Moses’s so-called public works and Washington’s Third World foreign policies hover over Unisphere today, as Trump threatens to wall off the United States and so-called development increasingly encloses Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, in the name of so-called globalization, from those who come from across the globe to live and work and play in Queens. Between Neighborhoods suggests that history does not develop serially in a straight line; its meanings emerge between images, between spectator and screen, between present and past, between art and scholarship.
